So I thought I'd write about this because it has happened twice and each time it makes me laugh.
This is me having a conversation with a foreign friend (ff):
FF: Hey want to get Fika with me today?
Me: Ya, I'm down.
FF: Oh, why? Are you okay?
Hahahaha makes me laugh every time. I always forget and keep saying it. Where a California would interpret "I'm down" to "I'm down to do that" a foreigner would interpret it as "I'm feeling down." TWICE. Australian and German friend. Hahaha.
I then have to say explain to them that I mean, 'yes, I would like to go, it sounds good.'

I'm reading this book about a woman who learns Italian and she is often commenting about all the weird things Americans say that don't make sense to people learning English. One example she brought up was when trying to comfort someone we sometimes say, "I know how you feel, I've been there." Her foreign speaking partner always says, "Where have you been? What do you mean?"
